The Step-by-Step Process of Alloy Recycling
The Step-by-Step Process of Alloy Recycling
March 12, 2021

Apart from the obvious financial incentive of alloy recycling, there is also an environmental benefit. The recycling of various metal alloys allows us to preserve natural resources while demanding lower energy to process, in comparison to manufacturing new products utilizing newly sourced raw materials. Moreover, the recycling process generates less carbon dioxide and other toxic gasses, saves you money, and enables manufacturers to decrease their production costs.

The major steps of the general metal alloy recycling process are as follows.

Collection: this is the first step where various materials are collected from different points and are sold to scrap yards rather than being thrown into landfills.

Sorting: this second step separates valuable metals from other types of materials composing a recyclable item. Magnets and sensors are often utilized in huge recycling operations to help in sorting the materials. In small scrap yards, manual sorting is done apart from using magnets, such as looking for specific colours and weight.

Processing: in this third step of alloy recycling, shredding occurs wherein metals are turned into smaller pieces for the easier melting process. As a result, the shredded metals can be melted at an even lower energy. For instance, steel is made into blocks while aluminum is turned into sheets.

Melting: shredded metals are melted through big furnaces intended to melt a certain type of metal. It is during this step where a higher level of energy is needed.

Purifying: this is performed to make sure that the final recycled materials are free from any contaminants and release high quality products. Electrolysis is the most widely used method in purifying metals.

Solidifying: once metals have been purified, they will then be cooled and solidified and formed into desired shapes such as bars or pipes. They are then readily available to be used for manufacturing different products made of metal.
